Where do we pray?

Prayer is an obligatory act for every Muslim, both males and females. It is the second pillar of the five pillars of Islam. But, do prayers have specific places? If so, Where do we pray? And is there a specific direction to face during prayer? Let’s explore this, my dear children.

Allah Almighty says in Surah Al-Jumu’ah: “O you who have believed, when the adhan is called for the prayer on the day of Jumu’ah [Friday], then proceed to the remembrance of Allah and leave trade. That is better for you, if you only knew.”

He also says: “Establish prayer, pay zakat and bow with those who bow [in worship and obedience].” (Quran, Al-Baqara: 43)

Where do we pray?

Prayer is an obligation for both men and women, but it is obligatory for men to perform it in the mosque (masjid) while women can pray at home.

The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessing of Allah be upon him) said: “Whoever hears the call to prayer and does not respond, there is no prayer for him except for a valid excuse.”

There is a story about a blind man who came to the Prophet and said that he had no one to guide him to the mosque.

He asked for permission to pray in his own house, and the Prophet granted him permission.

However, when he turned to leave, the Prophet called him back and asked, “Can you hear the call to prayer?” The man replied, “Yes.” The Prophet said, “Then answer it.”

The call to prayer means here the Adhan.

Where is the sight of view while we pray?

In Sunnah we have to look at the place of prostration in prayer and the Prophet (peace and blessing of Allah be upon him) forbade looking at the sky.

Places of Performing Prayer

Where do we pray?

For men, it is obligatory to perform the prayer in the mosque (masjid), except for those who have a valid excuse.

As for women, it is permissible for them to pray at their homes.

It is also permissible to pray in any clean and non-contaminated place on Earth.

This is based on hadith of the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessing of Allah be upon him): “The earth has been made for me as a place of worship and a mean of purification.”

Women are also allowed to pray in the mosque, but it is generally preferable for them to pray at home.

However, if a woman is outside her home and fears delaying the prayer, it is permissible for her to pray in the mosque.

Nevertheless, it is preferable for her to pray in her own private space, such her home where she seeks privacy.

Is it permissible to pray in the same place at home?

It is okay to stay in certain places to pray at home.
